A grief letter is simply a conversation continued in writing, in your own voice, in the same words you would have spoken if your loved one were still here.
If you’re missing someone, whether they died years ago or recently, consider writing them a letter. This letter can create space for you to express yourself without judgment and give your thoughts and grief somewhere to go. This includes negative feelings as well as positive.
Ideas to get you started:
–What didn’t you get to say?
–What have they missed?
–What they meant to you.
I wrote a letter to my mother when I turned fifty, she died when I was eight. I included my letter in my book, Mom’s Gone, Now What? It’s thirty years later and I think it’s time to write another.
Coaching question: Will you join me in writing a grief letter?
